Ramey-Estep High School Students Give Back to Soldiers
with Project Appreciation
RUSH, KY – On Friday, November 10th Ramey-Estep High School students prepared 156 care packages as part of Project Appreciation, and the packages were sent to the soldiers on Veteran’s Day. The youth were very enthusiastic about the project because they in a way were able to relate to the soldiers because they understand what it is like to away from their family for a long period of time.
The project was the idea of Ann Brewster, principal of REHS. She has a cousin serving in Iraq, Captain Mara Boggs. With the idea of the students giving back to the soldiers Mrs. Brewster asked the students if they would like to participate in packaging various items to send out to our troops serving in Iraq. The students were extremely excited about the plan and it was put into action.
Each youth put together a package for a soldier containing various food items that the soldiers may not get on a regular basis, toiletries, a set of specially designed stationary and a Christmas Card so that every soldiers would be able to write to someone back home. To add a special touch to each package the youth were given special envelopes to draw on and design something special for their soldier, and they also included a personal letter or card to the soldier. Various items and personal toiletries were donated from our staff at REHS, Ashland Community Technical College, and Holiday Inn Express. Ramey-Estep Homes also donated a large amount of food items and snacks.
This project was a huge success due to the support we received from our staff and youth. It also gave our students an opportunity to see how it feels to reach out with care to others.
