Gertrude Ramey receives honor from the Kentucky Commission on Women

RUSH, KY – Ms. Lyda Gertrude Ramey was selected as a 2008 Kentucky Women Remembered honoree by the Kentucky Commission on Women.  Ms. Ramey opened an orphanage out of her home in 1944 and cared for children until her death in 1991 – leaving a legacy of caring for more than 5,000 children who passed through her doors.

Kentucky Women Remembered began in 1978 and consists of portraits depicting outstanding women in Kentucky’s history.  The exhibit found a permanent home in the Kentucky State Capitol in 1996 after many years of traveling around the state.  Thousands of visitors view the portraits each year and learn about the heritage and contributions of Kentucky women.

Kentucky citizens nominate women to be honored and, from those nominations, KCW commission members select the women to be added to the exhibit.  The newest portraits will be unveiled at a formal ceremony held in the Capitol Rotunda on March 11th 2008, which will also serve as the official kick-off of Women’s History Month.
